Major corporations leave Ireland

The corporations Motorola, BUPA and FCI have all made or implemented plans to leave the Irish market. This has come as a great shock, considering that Motorola’s withdrawal alone will leave up to 350 jobless. The US-based telecommunications giant has a plant in Cork.
The news shocked senior level officials and statesmen as well. This company has operated on the Irish market for a quarter of a century. What is even worse, the Cork branch is involved with software development and employs highly qualified staff.

Desperate people in Dublin crusade for modeling jobs

Over 100 people rushed to the Burlington Hotel in Dublin with the hope to get catalog, catwalk or advertising work. The reason was that Regardez model management agency had announced a modeling competition with free photo trials.

Carlo Ponti died at 94

The famous Italian producer and husband of Sophia Loren died two days ago in a Swiss hospital. He was hospitalized in Geneva for pulmonary complications, but the precise cause of death is still unknown.

Ponti was born in 1913 near Milan and after working as a lawyer he started the career as a film-maker. He worked with world renowned directors like Federico Fellini and David Lean. Ponti’s fame came out in 1965, when he was nominated for an Oscar as a producer of "Doctor Zhivago". The audience knows his name also by films such as "Blow-Up," "The Verdict" and "The Cassandra Crossing".

“Rome” is back again (on TV)

Those that have already seen the first episode of the gigantic tale about Roman Empire will be captured by its second part, which first episode will be released on HBO this Sunday. Critics say that the written version is not so impressive as the film, because it is more attractive for the eye to follow the story with all the historical places, people and events into visual action. Cleopatra will be the main character with all her beauty and majesty. Support an Athlete campaign commences in Dublin

Special Olympics Ireland launched the “Support an Athlete” campaign in Dublin. The goal is to raise EUR 5 million for athletes. The initiative is backed by celebrities such as Colin Farrell.
SOI has helped thousands of disabled persons experience the benefits and joy of playing sports in the last four years, since the World Games were last held in Ireland. This was reported by SOI executive Mary Davis.

Tube station shut after gas leak

Services on the Hammersmith and City tube line has been partly suspended due to a gas leak.

Hammersmith underground station, which is on the Hammersmith and City line, has been closed since 1540 GMT.

The line is shut between Hammersmith and Edgware Road stations. Shepherd's Bush Road has also been closed between Brook Green and Hammersmith Broadway.

London Underground (LU) said the leak was near the Hammersmith Palais and an investigation is under way.

The grisly murder of plumber Anthony Campbell shook all Dublin. At the funeral his grandfather was choking with tears.
Anthony was killed during a hit on Martin 'Marlo' Hyland, a drug lord. He was an innocent victim in the crossfire. He was deliberately shot because the assassins were afraid of leaving a witness to their crime.
Almost 1000 people attended the young man's funeral at St John the Baptist and St Augustine church in Dublin.

BA grounds all domestic flights

British Airways is to cancel all UK domestic services from London Heathrow on Thursday following severe fog.

The firm said a significant number of European flights, including routes to Paris and Brussels served by the Eurostar, will also be grounded.

BA and other airlines cancelled more than 180 flights to and from Heathrow on Wednesday.

Some 18 Gatwick flights were affected as were services from Liverpool John Lennon and Cardiff International.

Rail travel to double by 2016

Passenger numbers on some of Britain's busiest rail services could double in the next 10 years, it has been claimed.

The predicted rise suggested by South West Trains (SWT) is more than double previous industry estimates.

Some 440,000 passengers use SWT trains every day, mainly into and out of London's Waterloo station.

The firm is increasing capacity on some of its most crowded routes, including the London to Portsmouth line, with measures including longer trains.

Oscar for Ennio Morricone

The 78-years old world famous composer of Untouchables and Cinema Paradiso has been nominated many times this far but has never won an Oscar. This time he is going to receive a honorary Oscar at the Academy Awards ceremony on 25th of February 2007.

Ennio Moriccone was born in Rome and has built a respectful 45-years career, during which composed the music for more than 300 scores, among which the renowned Malena, The Mission and Bugsy. He became most famous with the Sergio Leone’s westerns, such as “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”.

London hit by Tornado!

Six people were injured and up to 150 houses were damaged when a tornado swept through several London streets leaving a trail of destruction.

Rooftops were ripped off and cars were badly damaged as the twister hit the Kensal Rise area of north-west London.

One man suffered a serious head injury and five have been treated for minor injuries and shock.

Fire services have sealed six roads in a zone covering a quarter of a square mile and searched 100 properties.

Irish consortium to construct EUR 150 M ski resort in Bulgaria

An Irish consortium plans to invest EUR 150 million in a ski and spa resort in Bulgaria, the Irish Sunday Business Post reported on November 26.
The consortium intends to build a five star hotel, 1,000 apartments and a shopping center on a 25-acre site in Bulgarian ski region Bansko.
The property development site was sold for a mere EUR 1.5 million a year ago, but it was recently reevaluated at EUR 12 million according to the newspaper.

2012 London pool plan scaled down

The London 2012 Olympics aquatics centre will be smaller than originally planned in order to save costs.

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell sent the designer "back to the drawing board" last December as the original £75m budget looked set to double.

The wave-shaped roof will now be 14,000 square feet, which is just over a third of the original 35,000 square feet.

The original capacity of 20,000 seats will remain with 15,000 for the main pool and 5,000 for the diving pool.

Berlusconi collapses at a meeting

The ex Italian Prime minister Silvio Berlusconi fainted while holding a speech at a meeting with young followers of the centre-right ideas in Montecatini Terme, Tuscany. Mr Berlusconi fell on the floor with closed eyes. After he was taken out from the room, he felt better and refused to leave with the ambulance but his own car. Later on, the former prime minister went by a helicopter to a hospital in Milan, where examinations were about to be made.

Gardai investigate horrific murder case in north Dublin

Baiba Saulite, a woman of Latvian origin, was shot to death in front of her home in north Dublin in what police suspect may have been a contract killing. This happened just before 22 pm. Her two sons, Mohammed Rami Hassan (3) and Ali Alexsandre Hassan (5), were asleep upstairs at the time.
Her husband Hassan Hassan, who is in jail for car robbery and awaits sentencing on a charge of abducting his children, will be questioned by police with regard to the incident.

Versace plans to build luxury hotels

The world renowned Italian fashion house Versace has recently announced that its owners plan to build 15 luxury resorts in different countries.

Versace magnate is already an owner of a hotel on Australia's Gold Coast but this time an agreement with local Australian proprietor was signed about the new 7-star hotels which will be furnitured and designed with the typical for the fashion company glamour.

A mammoth in Trafalgar Square

A woolly mammoth has been placed in Trafalgar Square to highlight the effects of climate change.

The 11.5ft (3.5m) replica was unveiled by the Natural History Museum to warn how life in Britain could undergo radical change in the next 50 years.

The museum's researchers believe we may have to adapt to "baking summers" as well as "mortally freezing winters".

"The British way of life and Homo Britanicus could go the same way as the woolly mammoth," the museum warned.

Scissor Sisters brought to justice

Following the grisly murder of Kenyan man Farah Noor in Dublin, there is evidence that the perpetrators Linda and Charlotte Mulhall will be brought to justice. The Dublin sublings were nicknamed the Scissor Sisters following the event. 31-year old Linda Mulhall appeared in Dublin District Court on a charge of criminal damage of a house in the area of Crumlin/Drimnagh, Dublin, in July this year. Prosecuting officer Niall Keena told the court that Linda referred to the charge as ‘ridiculous’. Linda Mulhall, a mother-of-four from Tallaght, was found guilty of the manslaughter of her mother's African lover last month. The court found her 23-year old sister Charlotte guilty of his murder. The sisters will be sentenced on December 4 of this year.

Ryanair negotiates with Bulgarian airports on new bases

Low-cost Irish carrier Ryanair is planning to open a number of new bases next year and is considering destinations in Eastern Europe to this end, The Irish Examiner reported. The airline was quoted in saying that it was negotiating with airports in Cyprus, Switzerland and the soon- EU members Bulgaria and Romania about launching new flight routes. Ryanair reportedly hasn’t contacted Bulgaria’s Civil Aviation Authority. Sofia airport declined to comment the issue. A month ago a source from the airport said Ryanair had expressed an interest in using the airport and that several meetings with representatives of the carrier had taken place.

Rules on flight liquids changed

New rules permitting small amounts of liquids in hand luggage on European and UK flights have come into effect.

Liquids are limited to 100ml per container and no more containers than would fit in a one-litre plastic bag.

The new EU-wide rules represent a relaxation of the anti-terror measures in the UK, but will represent a clampdown for many European countries.

The UK imposed curbs in August after police said they had foiled a plot to bring down as many as 10 planes.

"Tourist" brothel gang jailed

Six members of a brothel gang, that made about £2m in less than 17 months have been jailed.

Scores of young women were recruited in Malaysia and smuggled into the UK posing as tourists.

Southwark Crown Court was told at least one was tricked into leaving her family after being offered an all expenses paid sightseeing trip.

The six men from London, Birmingham and Hertfordshire, were sentenced to up to five years each.

Ireland anticipates major population boom

Ireland and Cyprus are the only two EU countries set for a boom in the population between 20 and 34 years of age. The members of this group will increase exponentially in the period until 2010 according to a NCB Stockbrokers report. Generally the number of people in this age group is declining throughout Europe.
The report indicates that the EU population will remain largely unchanged until 2020. However, the 15-64 age group in Ireland will rise more dramatically than in all other EU states.
